Neurology is a medical specialty that deals with disorders of the nervous system. It deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of disease involving the central and peripheral nervous system.
Electromyography, or EMG, involves testing the electrical activity of muscles. EMG testing is performed with another test that measures the conducting function of nerves. This is called a nerve conduction study.
In some medical conditions the electrical activity of the muscles or nerves is not normal. Finding and describing these electrical properties in the muscle or nerve may help your doctor diagnose your condition.
EMG may aid with the diagnosis of nerve compression or injury (such as carpal tunnel syndrome), nerve root injury (such as sciatica), and with other problems of the muscles or nerves.
Neurologists perform neurological examinations of:
- The nerves of the head and neck
- Muscle strength and movement
- Balance, ambulation and reflexes
- Sensation, memory, speech, language, and other cognitive abilities.
They also perform diagnostic tests such as the following:
EEG (electroencephalography)
EMG/NCV (electromyography/nerve conduction velocity)
